Fine Needle Aspiration Of Neck Masses

Also called fine needle biopsy, this technique enables the otolaryngologist to retrieve enough tissue for microscopic analysis allowing him to make an accurate diagnosis. Fine Needle Aspiration is used for diagnosis in:

  • Thyroid Gland
  • Neck Lymph Nodes
  • Neck Cysts
  • Salivary glands ( parotid, submaxillary)
  • Inside of the Mouth
  • Lumps

A small needle is inserted into the mass with a small amount of tissue being drawn back into the needle. This tissue is then evaluated microscopically leading to a diagnosis. This procedure is generally accurate and frequently prevents the patient from having an open, surgical biopsy, which is more painful and costly. Local anesthesia may be used but is frequently not required. When found early, most cancers in the head and neck can be cured with little difficulty. Cure rates are greatly improved if diagnosis and treatment is obtained early.
